Are Plastic Tubs Suitable for Hot-Fill or Frozen Foods?
Food-grade tubs come in a variety of plastics with different thermal tolerances. For products that require freezing such as ice cream, frozen yogurt, berries, fish fillets or meat patties, opt for freezer-suitable containers. If the product involves hot-fill or reheated from frozen in the packaging, such as ready-to-eat meals, look for tubs with a wide thermal tolerance and microwave suitability. Tubs are also fitting for foods that won't be submitted to temperature extremes during storage, such as popcorn, dips, salsas, butter, ready-made icing, and deli container that hold items like olives, stuffed peppers, and shaved meats.
Types of Tubs
Tubs come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. Select from round, oblong, or square ones with numerous heights and capacities. Review those with handles for ease of transportation. Natural or clear transparent tubs allow quick viewing of products. If this isn't necessary, white plastic tubs may be preferred. High-density polyethylene or HDPE plastics are suitable for products that require freezing, steam sanitizing or hot-fill below 180 degrees Celsius. Polypropylene or PP plastic is highly durable and chemical and heat resistant, allowing for hot-fill processes. Lids are either hinged or designed to fit snap-lock containers with tamper-evident features optional. Hinged lids are suitable for bulk dry foods, pet foods, or powdered cleaning products such as laundry detergent. Lids may be sold separately for enhanced branding customization. Choose recyclable lids and tubs for a sustainable packaging solution.
