Each year, more states are voting to legalize medical and/or recreational use of cannabis, creating emerging markets for related products and services. The wide variety of cannabis products stretches across numerous industries and is quickly creating demand for innovative and functional packaging solutions.

Flower Packaging

Cannabis flower generally comes to mind when someone mentions marijuana. This dried leaf-like product has special packaging requirements to keep the flower as fresh as possible. Cannabis flower is subject to degradation when subjected to harsh light and UV exposure. Storing Cannabis in dark glass will provide UV resistance, allowing the right amount of light to keep the buds from becoming moldy or stale, while extending shelf life. High performance and trendy violet glass jars are an are ideal packaging solution for storing cannabis flower or concentrates. This ultraviolet glass provides the highest standard of storage. The molecular structures of cannabidiol are permanently activated and naturally energized by violet radiation to better preserve liquids and perishables and extend shelf life. More economical options are available for UV-resistant storage of cannabis with amber glass jars.

Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates such as dab or shatter require small, shallow containers that make it easy to access product. Due to the high level of THC in these products, child-resistance* is a key feature for packaging intended to reach the end user.

Pre-Roll

Cannabis pre-roll products are often referred to as joints or blunts. By offering both protection for the product and child-resistance, plastic vials with child-resistant caps are an excellent option for housing pre-roll products.

Tinctures

CBD has been said to reduce pain, inflammation and even anxiety. This type of cannabidiol product is sold in tincture bottles that make controlled dispensing easy. CBD products are commonly stored in dark glass colors such as amber or cobalt blue to provide UV resistance and protect the product housed inside. Child-resistant dropper bottles are available for CBD isolate products that include THC. Check child-resistant packaging requirements for full spectrum CBD products that contain 0.03% CBD or less. For broad spectrum products, you will find many options for dropper bottles with standard finishes.

Edibles, Capsules & Softgels

The edibles category is one of the fastest growing markets for cannabis products. These tasty treats contain CBD or cannabis product in a consumable, edible format such as gummies, baked goods and more. Gummies are commonly sold in packer bottles, similar to vitamin or pill bottles. Edibles packaging should have a wide neck mouth that allows for easy dispensing of the product.

Topicals

With so many reported benefits of CBD, the market is ripe with opportunity and innovation. Ointments and creams are commonly found in treatment pump bottles, metal tins or glass jars. CBD infused balms are available in lip balm and lip gloss tubes. Roll-on bottles with stainless steel roller balls are an excellent choice for high-end oils to massage and gently penetrate the skin. Pain treatment and sports balms are packaged in child-resistant deodorant style roll-on bottles.

Beverages

Cannabis and CBD infused beverages are hot on the market right now and can be found in a variety of striking packaging options. Options on the market range from traditional glass French Square bottles to crown capped champagne style wine bottles.

Exit Packaging & Pouches

When leaving a dispensary with cannabis product, exit packaging is a must. These child-resistant pouches serve more than just the need for safety. High quality exit packaging and child-resistant pouches also protect flower and concentrate from harsh UV light and resist exposure to outside odors that may alter the taste and potency of the product.

Packaging options listed here are suggestions. When searching for any product related to cannabis, be sure to review all local and federal packaging requirements to ensure that your product is in strict compliance with the law.
